African Chief Hits Back At Renard Claims

An African football federation president has hit back at Herve Renard's claims that he denied the chance to coach their national team.

Earlier this week, the two-time Africa Cup of Nations winner revealed that he was offered the Senegal national team head coach position.

The post was recently vacated after the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) parted ways with Aliou Cisse, but the Frenchman revealed that the reason he did not take it was because he was unable to attain the assistant of his choosing.

The president of the FSF, Augustin Senghor, has now hit back at the ex-Ivory Coast and Zambia boss, claiming that Renard was never in the running to succeed Cisse.

"I have not received an application file from Mr Herve Renard. I can assure you, neither I nor the Executive Committee," the vice-president of CAF told Cible Sports.

"The decision that was made just after the departure of Aliou Cisse is to keep the current technical staff who know the group and who have already worked with Aliou.

"We do not want to touch anything. We will choose a new coach after the 2025 AFCON qualifiers," he added.

"If Herve Renard says he has submitted a file to the federation, ask him to who? In any case, he can no longer run for the position, he has already signed with Saudi Arabia."

Senghor elaborated further as to when supporters of the Lions of Teranga can expect a permanent replacement for the 2021 AFCON winner to be announced, saying: "We will meet after the qualifiers to choose a coach, who will ensure Aliou Cisse's legacy. I am sure he will have good results that meet the demands of Senegalese football".
