Lesotho Official: If It Were Us, Would Bafana Not Do The Same

The Lesotho Football Association claim there is no malice behind their complaint against Bafana Bafana to FIFA.

A Lesotho chief has claimed that South Africa would have also lodged a complaint to FIFA had they fielded an ineligible player in their recent 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier.

Controversy has arisen in the recent CAF FIFA World Cup qualifiers. Following Likuena's latest encounter against Bafana Bafana, it was discovered that Teboho Mokoena should never have played for Hugo Broos' charges during their clash at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.

The Mamelodi Sundowns playmaker was supposed to have been suspended for the match after accumulating yellow cards in previous qualifiers, an error not identified by the South African administrators.

Nevertheless, the 28-year-old played in what would end up being a 2-0 victory for the home side, but the three points achieved on that day could now be awarded to their opponents after the Lesotho Football Association decided to lodge a complaint against Bafana for fielding an ineligible player.

The secretary general of the LFA, Mokhosi Mohapi, has, however, stated that there was no malice behind their complaint and that SAFA would have done the same had a similar situation occurred for them.

"We are hoping for them to respect their own regulations and act appropriately," Lesotho Football Association secretary general Mokhosi Mohapi told BBC Sport Africa.

"Even if they just caution South Africa, it will be okay. If they give us the points, so be it. [It would be] the cherry on top.

"There's no malice but it's just that we are looking for the regulations to be adhered to. If it were us who had defeated South Africa, wouldn't [they] do the same?"
