Exclusive: Two Kaizer Chiefs Stars Voted In SA's CAF African Team of the Year

Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango was the only Premier Soccer League player and the only African-based player to be named in the official CAF African Team of the Year 2018.

However, the Masandawana captain did not make the South African version of the prestigious team, the International Federation of Professional Footballers (FIFPro) told Soccer Laduma.

The official 2018 CAF African Team of the Year was announced on Tuesday, and Soccer Laduma subsequently contacted FIFPro for the selections made by Mzansi's players.

The answer came swiftly, revealing that 23 Bafana players voted for their peers and there were five changes to the official team, which was voted for by 503 national players from 26 African countries.

In goal, Chiefs and Bafana shot-stopper Itumeleng Khune was preferred over Onyango. In defence, Kalidou Koulibaly, Eric Bailly and Serge Aurier made the SA selection like in the official African Team of the Year, but Inter Milan and Ghana wing-back Kwadwo Asamoah was preferred over Mehdi Benatia.

In midfield, Riyad Mahrez and Naby Keita were also voted into the South African selection, while Atletico Madrid and Ghana man Thomas Partey was replaced by Chelsea and Nigeria player Victor Moses.
