Coach: Why Rene Weiler And I Left Al Ahly

Coach: Why Rene Weiler And I Left Al Ahly

One of Al Ahly's former coaches has revealed why he and Rene Weiler left the Egyptian giants before Pitso Mosimane took over in 2020.

Pitso: Wenger Was Impressed With Ahly Star

The Red Devils are among the most successful clubs in the world, with Mosimane continuing their knack of picking up silverware since his departure from Mamelodi Sundowns two years ago.

Before the South African took charge of the Cairo club, it was Swiss manager Weiler who oversaw matters on the sidelines as he and his backroom staff celebrated winning both the Egypt Super Cup and Egyptian Premier League titles with the team.

Ex-Al Ahly assistant manager David Siza, who worked under Weiler, believes his former colleague might have still been at the club today were it not for the COVID-19 pandemic.

"It was a great time with Al Ahly and very difficult because of the COVID-19 pandemic," he told Al-Hayah TV.

"We won the Egyptian Super Cup against Zamalek, but then had to leave because of the coronavirus.

Here are the 10 highest-ranking African nations in FIFA's latest rankings:

"There were no negotiations to return to Al Ahly, these were just rumours, but it's nice that people in Egypt still talk about me as it means we did a good job when were with Al Ahly.

"I think that if it wasn't for COVID-19, Weiler would've stayed for another two or three years at least, but we have to accept what happened.

"I had started negotiations with an Egyptian team but things didn't work out. I love the Egyptian Premier League, it's very competitive and I don't mind coaching in Egypt in the future.

"Al Ahly is a great team and it would be an honour for me to come back here in the future, but I also have no problem working in Zamalek or Pyramids, which is also a big club."

Siza also had some kind words for Mosimane, whom he feels has done an excellent job since taking over the mantle.

"Pitso Mosimane is achieving great things with the club, especially when looking at the amount of trophies he has won and the two Club World Cup bronze medals," he added.
