Al Ahly Boss 'Punishes' Players After Cairo Derby Defeat

Al Ahly Boss 'Punishes' Players After Cairo Derby Defeat

Marcel Koller gave his players mandatory training after their loss to Zamalek in the Egyptian Premier League.

Al Ahly manager Marcel Koller was reportedly very unhappy with his players after their 2-1 defeat to bitter rivals Zamalek on Monday evening, and made a specific demand to his players after the encounter.

The Red Devils suffered only their second league defeat of the campaign when they came up against the White Knights on Monday evening.

Ahmer Abdelkader scored a 73rd minute leveller after Seifeddine Jaziri opened the scoring for Zamalek just before half-time, and the Tunisian marksman was on hand to net the winner in the 86th minute as Jose Gomes' men secured their first league win over Ahly since 2020.

The result did not go down well with Koller, and according to Yallakora, after scolding his players in a three-minute rant after the match, the Swiss tactician demanded that all of the squad return to the pitch to take part in physical training.

The same report claims that the 2022/23 CAF Champions League-winning manager demanded that his players put the loss behind them and focus on their next match in continental competition against TP Mazembe.

He explained that another meeting between the team would be held when they returned to the Mokhtar El Tetsh Stadium training ground before they travel to Lubumbashi.

After the match, Ahly executive Khaled Bebo made it clear Koller would be the only one who would engage with the media and in the post-match press conference, the Zurich native defended his tactics despite all the scrutiny from fans and media.

"We didn't start the game with the wrong formation," Koller said after the game, as per KingFut.

"If I make early substitutions, you complain and if I make late ones, you also complain.

"I think we were in control for the first 25 minutes, then we allowed Zamalek to get back in the game because of naive mistakes.

"We conceded a goal at the end of the first half and in the second were the better side, but Zamalek scored the winning goal from an unorganised move."
