The Red Devils are one of the most prolific clubs in world football as far as winning trophies is concerned. Last season, in Marcel Koller's debut campaign with the Egyptian giants, the 64-year-old tactician led the team to all five trophies that were on offer in 2022/23.

Already holders of the CAF Champions League, their skipper has now revealed that the club is keen to carry their continental pedigree into Africa's newest club competition by becoming its first-ever champions.

"This is our character in Al Ahly, that we always want to fight to be winners. Since everyone of us was born we are like this. We must always fight for the next title. The titles we have won before is history and we are not looking at that. We want to achieve something new, and we want to do that with this new tournament," the Egypt international told members of the media, as per the Africa Super League's official website.

While the shot-stopper may be harbouring ambitions of doing well in the tournament, they face a tricky test in their opening encounter against Tanzanian giants Simba away in Dar es Salaam on Friday.

El Shenawy was in goal for Ahly's last two defeats against the Reds of Msimbazi, but he insisted the encounter will not be won and lost in the first leg at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium.

"In both occasions, when we lost here, we went all the way to the final, and in one occasion we won the cup. So for us, what is important is the 180 minutes, not just the 90 minutes here in Dar es Salaam," he added.
