African Stars Who Missed Crucial Penalties

African Stars Who Missed Crucial Penalties

Sadio Mane's penalty miss helped end Senegal's 2017 AFCON hopes on Saturday – here are some other Africans, including Samuel Eto'o, Didier Drogba and a few Mzansi stars, who also missed crucial penalties for their countries.

The Liverpool forward's miss saw the Lions of Teranga's tournament come to an end and Cameroon advance to the semi-finals.

He was not the first famous Senegalese to fail from the spot, however, as his own coach experienced similar heartbreak. In the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations final, it was Aliou Cisse who missed his country's final penalty and he also had to watch the Indomitable Lions celebrate.

Didier Drogba, one of Africa's greatest players of all time, experienced gut-wrenching penalty failures in two AFCON finals. In 2006, he missed the first penalty in the Ivory Coast's 4-2 shootout defeat to Egypt, while in 2012 he missed another one in extra-time of the final against Zambia, who ended up lifting the trophy after winning the subsequent shootout. Sadly, Drogba would be one of the few African greats who never lifted the AFCON trophy.

The most crucial penalty miss in African history came at the feet of Ghana's Asamoah Gyan at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. The Black Stars striker, who had a brilliant tournament, had the chance to help Ghana become the first African country in history to reach the semi-finals after Luis Suarez prevented a certain goal with his hand on the line. However, Gyan missed his spot-kick late in extra-time, and Ghana lost the subsequent shootout.

South Africa has only ever taken part in two AFCON penalty shootouts. In 2000, Bafana Bafana beat Tunisia 4-3 on penalties in the AFCON third-place playoff, despite Shaun Bartlett and Siyabonga Nomvethe missing their attempts.

However, in 2013, South Africa were not as lucky as Gordon Igesund's side were knocked out in the quarter-finals after Dean Furman, May Mahlangu and Lehlohonolo Majoro missed in a 3-1 shootout defeat to Mali.

The most recent crucial penalty miss came from Tokelo Rantie, who hoofed the ball over the bar in Bafana's AFCON 2015 opener against Algeria. Shakes Mashaba's side were leading 1-0 at the time but ended up losing 3-1, and subsequently exited the tournament with just one point from the group stage.
