Shakes Mashaba’s Bafana Watch

With 2015 having already seen two rounds of fixtures played in the Absa Premiership, the Fan Park crew decided to take a look at which players Shakes Mashaba will be keeping an eye on.

With an international break set to take place next month, we will constantly monitor which players could be on the of the Bafana Bafana head coach's list.

Here are some players who are pushing for a call-up…

Lehlohonolo Majoro (Orlando Pirates)

The striker was controversially left out of South Africa’s Africa Cup of Nations squad, despite having enjoyed an incredible end to 2014. He has since started the New Year on the right foot and has scored twice in as many games for Pirates. However, his red card on the weekend could dampen his hopes of a return to the national team.

Itumeleng Khune (Kaizer Chiefs)

Calls for the shot-stopper to be included in Bafana Bafana’s AFCON team spread across the country, and there was an inevitable array of disappointment when the Kaizer Chiefs man was left behind. But now that he is back from injury and getting game time too, Mashaba will certainly be keeping an eye on the former first-choice goalkeeper.

Oupa Manyisa (Orlando Pirates)

This will be a controversial name considering his inconsistent form this season, but he was still included in the 2015 AFCON squad. His recent game for the Bucs versus Platinum Stars proved why Shakes was right to instil trust in him, assisting in both of his team’s goals. He could be the perfect creative man behind Bafana’s strike force…

Lerato Lamola (Bloemfontein Celtic)

The Bloemfontein Celtic youth product burst onto the scene last season and has since got 2015 underway with a bang. On Sunday afternoon, the youngster found the back of the net twice against AmaZulu in a 3-0 win.

Tefu Mashamaite (Kaizer Chiefs)

It seemed strange that Tefu was left out of the AFCON team despite being in great form for Chiefs. He may be on the wrong side of 30, but he has certainly rolled back the years this season… With Chiefs, he offers height and an aerial threat, which is something that is lacking in Mashaba’s team.

Sthembiso Ngcobo (Bidvest Wits)

The striker was in impressive form for the Clever Boys last season and has managed to carry that into 2015. Having previously played under Shakes Mashaba at a national level, the towering striker could be selected despite also being on the wrong side of 30. His experience may aid the likes of the young strikers Shakes has chosen to select recently. ‘Sthem’ has also scored five goals this season.

These are just a few names, what other players would you select in this team?
