Following the news surfacing that Kaizer Chiefs star George Lebese has handed himself to authorities following allegations involving the player being involved in an incident where he physically hit his girlfriend, the Fan Park crew will take a look at some South African players who had run-ins with the law.
Punch Masenamela – Fake Kidnapping
This is one of the more recent incidents involving the on-loan Platinum Stars left-back, who allegedly faked his own kidnapping. It was later revealed that after serious action from the Hawks division of the South African police, Masenamela was found safe in a hotel in Johannesburg and that the kidnapping was a hoax.
Benson Mhlongo – Firearm Possession
In October 2010, former Orlando Pirates defender Benson Mhlongo was arrested on the charge of being in possession of an unlicensed firearm. The player was slapped with a bail fee R1000 following the incident.
Bryce Moon – Culpable Homicide
The former Mamelodi Sundowns star was accused of killing domestic worker Mavis Ncube in a car accident and was convicted of culpable homicide in 2013. Moon was later fined R60 000 by the authorities as well as having his drivers license suspended for six months.
Mandla Sithole – Murder
In 2011, the former Pirates star was sentenced to 10 years in prison for murdering his neighbour in March 2009. The court ruled that Sithole would serve eight years of his sentence before considering parole.
