OPINION: Mngqithi Should Leave The Country

We often talk about how South African players need to go test themselves outside the country, but we don't usually get into why it's important for coaches to do the same.

It's pleasing to see that there is a growing number of South African coaches who are testing themselves on foreign land, but that number has to keep on rising. And one man who should join the like of Pitso Mosimane, Rulani Mokwena, Morena Ramoreboli and Fadlu Davids outside the country is Manqoba Mngqithi. He did, after all, say that he wants to win the Champions League.

There is nothing left for Mngqithi in South African football and it would really make no sense for him to go work at Golden Arrows or Richards Bay. This is man who has a CAF Champions League medal and so much experience on the continent, so it would make sense for him to seek opportunities on the continent, especially in countries such as Tanzania, Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia.

Mngqithi has gained a lot of experience as a technical team member at Sundowns and would no doubt have learnt a lot about what it takes to do well. Why not test yourself against some of the big coaching names on the continent?

Going back to Arrows or any of the other clubs in the local league may be a step backwards, unless he can find an opportunity locally that would open the door to playing continental football in future. But, not many of the local clubs have the budget to consistently take part in continental football, so it may not make sense to take on a role locally.

This is the perfect opportunity for Mngqithi to start looking for what's out there. It may not come now, but there is probably no need to rush. And with clubs on the continent usually making changes, Mngqithi should prepare himself to take on a role on the continent and take his coaching career to another level.
