Mamelodi Sundowns had their first taste of CAF Champions league action as they drew 1-1 with Seychelles side St Mitchel United in the CAF preliminary rounds on the weekend. However, there was one thing that stood out for every Downs supporter leading up to the game.
Defensive midfielder Hlompho Kekana was once again relegated to the bench after being replaced by a Bongani Zungu, who seems to be hitting form. Could this be a sign of Kekana not being as relied upon as he was before?
Last season in the Absa Premiership, Kekana was a standout performer in the midfield for Downs and formed a perfectly balanced partnership with Teko Modise.
However, the resurgence of the talented Bongani Zungu could be very hard for coach Pitso Mosimane to ignore, which is why he entrusted Zungu in midfield ahead of Kekana for the second time in a row.
‘Ben 10’ as Zungu is known, is currently a Bafana Bafana international and one of two Downs stars who made the cut for Bafana’s AFCON trip. This also proves that not only is he trusted at club level, but that he could potentially be one of South Africa’s best midfielders.
Having said that, will Zungu oust Kekana in the Sundowns midfield?
