The story
Former Bafana Bafana striker Katlego "Mahoota" Mashego has taken a trip down memory lane to look back at his successful professional football career in the PSL.
The Bushbuckridge, Mpumalanga-born, striker was a bit of a journeyman and turned out for Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns, SuperSport United, Golden Arrows and Chippa United, having started his career at Hellenic and Silver Stars.
Since his top-flight debut with the now-defunct Hellenic in 2001, Katlego Mashego has consistently found the back of the net for every club he's played for.
The seasoned striker has made over 240 appearances in the Premiership, netting 73 goals. Along with making 22 caps for Bafana, Mashego has won a mammoth five league titles, two with Matsatsantsa, two with Downs and one with the Buccaneers.
After speaking about what led him to Hellenic and his eventual move to the now defunct Silver Stars [Platinum Stars] with OBI Knows and Happy Jele on their podcast, "iDiski Dines", Mashego stated why he left a successful Silver Stars for Matsatsantsa.
When asked about what made him leave to join SuperSport United, Mashego simply answered, "More money. At that time, we were just thinking about money. I think it was around 2007, or 08. I think my manager as well and I think maybe we had an eye on the future because 2010 World Cup was coming.
"He wanted me to go to SuperSport because the coach that wanted me at SuperSport was Pitso. And maybe by going to SuperSport, it might've bettered my chances of going to the World Cup. When I arrived, Pitso left for Bafana permanently and a new coach arrived," he shared.
