Although Kaizer Chiefs have stellar names in their starting XI this season, it can be said that the players who are second in command may not be of the same standard.
This holds true in Chiefs' left-back department, with Tsepo Masilela basically owning the position at the club. In turn, he has made it extremely difficult for any another player to take his place.
Levy Mokgothu was signed from Moroka Swallows at the beginning of the current Absa Premiership season, but has not played a single game for Amakhosi in the Premier Soccer League.
In Chiefs' recent 2-0 loss to SuperSport United in the league, Masilela was forced out of the tie due to injury. This may have been the only time for Mokgothu to showcase why he was signed, instead, right-back Siboniso Gaxa occupied the left back spot.
Looking at the situation retrospectively, one could argue why coach Stuart Baxter would replace a left-back with a right-back when Mokgothu, a natural left-sided defender, is available. Siphiwe Mtsweni, another left-back at the club, was also not given the opportunity.
Is Masilela really that good that every other left-back at the club doesn’t stand a chance of filling in for him? At the very least, Mokgothu and Mtsweni deserve a chance to showcase what they are made of.
How do you think Chiefs should go about addressing this issue?
