With so much talk circulating over how Kaizer Chiefs have struggled since the New Year, I have decided to clear the air over last year’s title chase. In fact, it was Sundowns who were better and not Chiefs having dropped form!
Naturally, we Masandawana fans don’t tend to compliment Chiefs, but as our club overtook them in title chase, we have to admit that it was Sundowns’ good form rather than Chiefs’ failed form which saw us claim the Absa Premiership title.
Many feel that Chiefs ‘threw away’ the title last season after a bad run of results, but in actual fact it is the polar opposite.
In the first half of the 2013/14 campaign, Chiefs landed up taking 30 points off their opponents, while in the second half of the campaign, they actually secured 33 points. So Stuart Baxter’s men accumulated three more points - something which the fans have failed to pick up on.
Not only that, Sundowns landed up equaling the same number of points Chiefs did after the New Year, and the 1-0 victory over the Amakhosi back in April had a heavy impact on the standings.
After that April victory over the Soweto side, Chiefs also dropped a further five points, while we managed to take home 15 points compared to their nine.
As one can see, Chiefs weren’t all that bad after the turn of the year, but it was rather that Sundowns managed to edge them out with better form and results.
Masandawana, what are your thoughts on this?
