With the Clasico fast approaching, the Fan Park decided to take a look at some of Barcelona’s best ever players in the history of the fixture – not necessarily based on stats, but based on their importance to the team.
The Fan Park brings you five of the best El Clasico players from the Catalan club.
Although he’s retired, Carles Puyol was a real no-nonsense defender, and he was always up for a battle in this tie. He led his team to several Clasico wins, and he was always the one left motivating his troops when they lost. He is a real legend at Barca, and would normally have been first on the team sheet for these fixtures.
Like Puyol, Xavi is another home-grown talent that has always thrived in the Clasico. These fixtures mean a lot to fans, and Barca’ midfield maestro would have had a full understanding of how important these games were to them. Even towards the latter stages of his career, he remained an important player in helping Barca control midfield in this highly competitive fixture.
The Argentine is the highest ever scorer in El Clasico with 21 goals, which includes two hat-tricks (one last year, and another when he was just 19-years-old). Real Madrid have grown tired of the sight of him and it’s no wonder why!
Another man from Barcelona’s famed ‘Golden Generation’ will not be forgotten anytime soon, after his exploits in the dominance over Real Madrid in recent years. His agility and vision have seen him become regarded as one of the best players in the long history of this contest.
In 2005, the Brazilian master produced possibly the finest individual display in an El Clasico when he scored a brace in Barcelona’s 3-0 win at the Santiago Bernabeau. His on-pitch performance at the height of his powers is difficult to forget, and even earned him applause from the opposition fans.
Can you name any other Barcelona players who you think should be on this list?
