Unforgettable Fernandez Moment: Facing Van Der Vaart

Unforgettable Fernandez Moment: Facing Van Der Vaart

Rowen Fernandez, Kaizer Chiefs, PSL

Former Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Rowen Fernandez has spoken about the moment he will never forget from his time playing in Germany.

Having joined Chiefs in 2001 from Wits University, he did well to win a place as the club's number one, Fernandez then earned a move to Arminia Bielefeld in Germany in 2007.

He was at the club until 2011 when he came back home to join SuperSport United before going back to Wits where he retired in 2014.

Speaking exclusively to the Siya crew, Fernandez shared an interesting story about the moment he will never forget, coming up against Dutch legend Rafael van der Vaart.

"When I moved to Germany from Chiefs, it was another level up. Again, it was full-time soccer (like at Chiefs), and it was great. You're forced to work every day constantly and every moment, you cannot have an off moment in any game, any training session, or in any Bundesliga match itself," he said.

"The guys you are facing are world-class players. I'll never forget playing Hamburg and they had Rafael van der Vaart playing for them and he was a Dutch legend. There was a free-kick inside our half on the halfway line and this ball came to me rocking and I couldn't believe it. From the halfway line! He just drilled it, and it was an unbelievable shot and I could tell that it was next level stuff now," added Fernandez.
