Twins In South African Football

Twins In South African Football

There have been quite a lot of footballers who have emulated their fathers or siblings in becoming professional players, however, twins in football is quite the rarity.

Today, the Fan Park crew takes a look twins who have graced the South African soccer fields.

Helman and Nkosiyabo Mkhelele
Not many people know that Helman Mkhelele had a twin brother, Nkosiyabo, who also played professional football. The less famous twin played for African Wanderers in the mid-90's but never achieved as much as his brother…

'Midnight Express' won the 1995 African Champions League with Orlando Pirates, as well as 1996 Africa Cup of Nations with Bafana Bafana. He also plied his trade abroad.

Ivan and Neil Wistanely
The Wistanely brothers cut their teeth at Wits University before they were both signed by Kaizer Chiefs. However, things didn't work out for the twins at Amakhosi. Towards the end of their careers, they played for different teams, with Neil playing for Mamelodi Sundowns, while his brother, Ivan, joined Moroka Swallows.

Wilfred and William Mugeyi
The twins, dubbed 'Silver Fox' and 'Gold Fox' respectively, are most remembered for their exploits at Umthatha Bush Bucks. Wilfred was a deadly striker, while his brother, William, was a defender. The twins also represented the Zimbabwean national team.

Brendon and Brandon Parusnath
The pair currently play for NFD side Golden Arrows. The Durban-born youngsters were part of the Abafana Bes'tende side which got relegated. However, they never really got a chance to showcase their talents, as Arrows were in a dire situation and couldn't afford to experiment with younger players. With Arrows having qualified for the Nedbank Cup, a lot of attention will be focused on the Parusnath twins.

Do you know of any other twins who have played at the highest level?
