SA Five-A-Side Team Hungry For World Championship Win

SA Five-A-Side Team Hungry For World Championship Win

The South African Five-A-Side team is expected to fly into Cape Town on Thursday 14 November, ahead of their participation in this weekend's Five-A-Side World Championship.

The SA team, captained by soccer freestyle sensation Khris Njokwana, will be up against 280 international players from 32 different countries in the hope of securing the World Championship win on Sunday.

Speaking ahead of the tournament, Njokwana highlighted his excitement about being in the tournament.

"We are thrilled to be representing our country and hoping we make it into Sunday's finals. From there, fingers crossed, we are all aware of how great a win on home soil will be," he said.

The team – click through the gallery above to see some of the members – qualified for the F5WC when they won the local league and beat more than 600 players back in August.

"It definitely hasn't been an easy road to get here, the local talent in SA is fast, fit and really skilled," Njokwana added.

"Training has been logistically demanding on the team as we are split across the country, the rest of the team are based in Soweto, while I live in Cape Town."

It was announced earlier this week that the Five-A-Side World Championship will be hosted in SA. The biggest amateur football tournament in the world will start on Saturday from 12pm and Sunday from 5pm at Fives Futbol, Century City.

Entrance is free and spectators can expect action-packed festivities and entertainment both on and off the pitch.

Speaking ahead of the championship kick off, Adam Fine, CEO of Fives Futbol and host of F5WC2018, said: "The international teams will be arriving on Thursday. I have been in contact with some of them ahead of the weekend and I have to say there is a huge amount of excitement.

There are some exceptional players and I think we are in for a thrilling tournament."
