Nicknames have become a big part of the South African game, and a lot of the time our footballers tend to embrace these labels with ease, but what are the best nicknames that have been given to players who have pulled on the Pirates kit?
Today, I take a look at some of the best past and present nicknames that have come out of Mayfair in the past few seasons.
Past Nicknames:
Daine Klate – "Stiga", "Klately" or even "Matatazela" for his quick feet when on the ball.
Tlou Segolela – "Gautrain" for his pacy runs along the flanks.
Khethokwakhe Masuku – "Majaivane" was given to him for the brilliant dance moves he performs whenever he celebrated a goal.
Present Nicknames:
Rooi Mahamutsa – "Ngubo", which translates to blanket, was given to the defender for his incredible ability to man-mark the opposition.
Oupa Manyisa – The nickname "Ace" is only given to special players, and that is exactly what the Bucs captain is. Due to his fine style of play and great first touch, Manyisa has become an "Ace" of the game.
Siyabonga Sangweni – "Nsimbi", meaning iron, was handed to the defender for his solidity at the back.
Lucky Lekgwathi – "Captain My Captain" had several nicknames bestowed upon him, including "Captain Fantastic". He also earned the title "Phinda Mzala" for his ability to score regular goals off set-pieces.
Lehlohonolo Majoro – The striker adopted the nickname "Major" for his ability to score decisive goals; it is also a play on his surname, the dropping of the final "o" being the only difference between the two names.
Thabo Matlaba– The full-back was handed the fun of name of 'Festival' for his ability to send his team into party mode with his goals and assists.
Special Mention:
Dr Irvin Khoza – The club chairman was labelled "The Iron Duke" by the club's fans for his toughness on and off the field.
