The story

Makhanya made his highly anticipated MLS debut on Saturday for Philadelphia Union, as their new coach, former Orlando Pirates defender Bradley Carnell, kicked off his coaching tenure with a 4-2 away victory against Orlando City.

The 19-year-old Makhanya had been with Philadelphia for 18 months, playing for Union's reserve side in the MLS Next Pro. Despite being on the bench for several matches last season, he had not yet made his league debut under the previous coach, Jim Curtin.

However, Carnell, the former Bafana Bafana fullback, immediately placed his trust in the young Durban-born defender, giving him a full 90-minute run in what was a dream start for Philly's South Africans pair.

"God's plan, I'm just living in it. Happy to start the season with a dub on the road," wrote the ex-Stellenbosch FC baller on his Instagram post, which included a gallery of snaps from his first MLS game.
