The story

Built ahead of the 2010 World Cup, the eThekwini's Moses Mabhida stadium is currently undergoing upgrades and refurbishments that aim to attract more visitors to the multi-purpose site.

As reported by various local outlets, a revamped viewing platform, a brand-new sky car, sea-facing bungee jumping and a zipline are included in a multi-million-rand upgrade planned for the iconic Stadium in Durban, with eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba making the announcement on Thursday.

The Durban city council has recently approved the extensive refurbishment project, which is estimated to cost R236 million. This will be the most significant renovation of the stadium since its inauguration for the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

The 56 000-seater has built a reputation of hosting Premier Soccer League cup finals, with the recent MTN8 final between Orlando Pirates and Stellenbosch FC being a sell-out.

Along with plans to refurbish the stadium, in efforts to keep it relevant to tourist visiting Durban as well as residents, the eThekwini Municipality deputy city manager Dr. Musa Gumede revealed that they're in discussion with Kaizer Chiefs to continue to host some of their home games, including the Soweto derby.

The stadium's facelift is set to be concluded by July 2025.
