The story
The South African football fraternity is grieving the loss of Orlando Pirates and Pretoria Callies legend, Lucas "Masterpieces" Moripe, who passed away on Tuesday at the age of 71.
According to local reports, Moripe's health recently worsened, and he died at his home in Atteridgeville. Funeral arrangements have yet to be confirmed by his family.
Although he never played for Bafana Bastyle, the Tshwane sporting icon was a fan of the Brazilians and attended their matches at the Lucas Masterpieces Moripe Stadium, where Sundowns play a chunk of their home matches.
Having shared a special bond with the man revered as "the god of football" by fans in the 70s, former Mamelodi Sundowns captains paid him a visit, unknowingly for the last time.
Alpheus "Go" Mabusela, Daniel "Mambush" Mudau, Hlompho Kekana, and Surprise Moriri visited the late Moripe at his Atteridgeville home during September as part of the club's Heritage Month celebrations.
"It was an important visit to honour Masterpieces and celebrate his legacy as one of the most iconic figures in South African football. He was so happy to see us and recognised each one of us," Go Mabusela told Sundowns' Digital Magazine.
Mabusela also told the Sundowns Magazine about the admiration Moripe had for Ka Bo Yellow.
"Moripe appreciates the dedication, passion and winning mentality that the Club embodies. Masterpieces believes Sundowns is one of the best-run teams in Africa as well as in the world.
"There is professionalism running through the team, which is evident when you look at the low number of yellow and red cards the team receives season after season, despite playing in many competitions. He has expressed that he will continue to support Mamelodi Sundowns for the rest of his life, no matter what," concluded the ex-Downs skipper.
In their surprise visit Moripe's residence in September, the ex-Downs captains handed over this season's jerseys and PUMA sneakers to the iconic SA football figure.
