Last night, Spain suffered another defeat at the hands of Slovakia, which has left me questioning whether Vicente Del Bosque is the right man for the job in the coaching of this once great team.
As if the World Cup disaster wasn't enough, Spain have now lost two matches in a row, following the loss to France last month. It's quite clear that the players who led Spain to pure dominance between 2008 and 2012 are now over the hill… far past their best.
However, last night, Casillas, Pique, Busquets and Iniesta all started for Spain. Koke was the only player from a new generation of Spanish players to have started the match and I think Del Bosque clearly hasn't got the message.
He needs to phase out the old players and bring through a new generation of Spaniards, who are showing great potential. Players like Alvaro Morata, Dani Carvajal, Iñigo Martinez, David De Gea, Rodrigo Moreno and the in-form Valencia striker, Paco Alcácer (who scored the only goal from the bench last night). Another future star, currently out injured, that needs to be given a chance is Jesé Rodriguez.
I honestly believe that these players can form part of the core of a team that can reach similar heights to the previous generation, and if they can be slowly phased in, with the right tactical approach, things will turn around. But Del Bosque seems to be against the idea, and if that continues, then maybe a new man should take his place.
Do you think Spain needs to start looking at bringing in younger players?
