Former Names Of PSL Teams

Former Names Of PSL Teams

They say change is good, and it's perhaps for this reason we've seen teams changing their colours, their emblems and sometimes even their names. Can you think of any in this regard?

Today, we take a look at teams that have changed their names over the years – and there are quite a few.

Free State Stars
Once upon a time, the Bethlehem-based outfit was known as Fairway Stars. Later on, they became known as Qwa Qwa Stars, and it was under that name that the team was most successful. In an effort to draw in more crowds, the team name was changed to its current moniker, inspired by the Free State Province instead of a town.

SuperSport United
Matsatsantsa were once known as Albany City, before being renamed to Pretoria City. To ring a few bells, Pretoria City were the Bob Save Super Bowl runners-up in 1995 while still campaigning in the first division. After acquiring sponsorship from SuperSport, the team was renamed SuperSport United. The side has been very successful in their current guise, notably clinching three league titles on the trot under the mentorship of Gavin Hunt.

Mpumalanga Black Aces
Previously known as Ukhamba Black Aces and also as Witbank Black Aces, Amazayoni have been the pride of the Mpumalanga province for many decades and are having one of their best seasons ever in the PSL.

Kaizer Chiefs
After breaking away from Orlando Pirates, a group of players led by Kaizer Motaung formed Kaizer XI, which later became known as Kaizer Chiefs. Motaung had played for Atlanta Chiefs in the US, so perhaps his love for the American side led to him to using the "Chiefs" title when naming his own team.

Orlando Pirates
When Orlando Pirates were founded in 1937, they were known as Orlando Boys Club. The new name was taken from a movie called The Sea Walk, with "Boys Club" later being replaced by Pirates.

What other clubs can you think of?
