The story
Amakhosi star Edson Castillo is regarded as the pride of the state of Bolívar in Venezuela, following his exploits in the PSL for the Soweto Giants, resulting in him earning a call-up to the Venezuela national team for the 2024 Copa America.
Castillo's Venezuela will take on Ecuador at the Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California on Sunday and will hope to get off to a great start in a tricky Group B that includes Mexico and Jamaica.
The box-to-box midfielder made an appearance at the Bolivar Development League 2024 finals and was interviewed by the Bolívar Football Association Instagram page, who posted:
"In an exciting encounter during the final celebration of the Bolívar Development League's 2024 grassroots football season, we had the honor of welcoming @edsoncastillo80, that state gladiator who has proudly represented the colors of our Bolívar state in the Venezuelan national team.
"Edson Castillo, star midfielder, shared with us his joy and excitement at witnessing the transformation that our football experiences and enjoys. In an exclusive interview, he spoke to us about his happiness in seeing these young people from the neighborhood and Ciudad Guayana enjoy football and the association's commitment to the development of grassroots football in #BolivarState.
"[He] thanked President @pedrobarros444 and his father Asdrúbal Castillo, member of the board of directors of AFEB (Bolívar Football Association), for their constant support in this transformative journey that state football is experiencing."
