Crunching Tackles Of The PSL

Crunching Tackles Of The PSL

Following Sifiso Myeni's worrying injury after a horrific tackle by Thulani Hlatshwayo in Wednesday night's league match between Orlando Pirates and Bidvest Wits at Orlando Stadium, the Fan Park crew decided to take a look at other crunching leg tackles that have hit the PSL.

There have been many ghastly challenges that have left the fans and the players wincing with anxiety. Here are a few that have made headlines of late.

Faty Papy vs Orlando Pirates
While this didn't lead to a broken leg, the Burundian saw his knee smashed into multiple pieces in a league match against Pirates in the 2013/14 season thanks to Happy Jele's heavy tackle. His injury required surgery, which kept him sidelined for a long time.

Ryan Chapman vs Santos
Ironically, this injury occurred when Chapman faced his former club Santos. In Wits' 3-1 defeat to the People's Team, he had to be stretchered off with a broken tibia after Wayne Arendse had gone in a little too strong. He was out for more than four months.

Jimmy Jambo vs Bidvest Wits
In another case of irony, the man who inflicted this tackle on Jambo was his former Kaizer Chiefs teammate Tinashe Nengomasha. The tough-tackling defender went in for a rash challenge that landed up ending Jambo's 2012/13 season prematurely. The Amakhosi defender retired from playing a year later as he struggled to recover from the setback.

Oupa Ngulube vs Black Aces
The Carara Kicks man was on an amazing run down the flank when he was on the receiving end of a heavy body check by Felix Musasa, breaking his leg in half. This shocking crack, which took place in 2009, left many feeling sick to their stomachs.

Philani Shange vs Platinum Stars
The player had only been on Chippa United's books for a few weeks before being ruled out for three months after suffering a broken shin from a dangerous tackle in an encounter against Stars.

Dillon Sheppard vs Free State Stars
Undoubtedly one of the most cringeworthy incidents in PSL football, many remember Sheppard's injury because his leg shattered in three different pieces, snapping both his fibia and tibia. At the time, "Sheppy" was playing for Mamelodi Sundowns, and they went on to win that Telkom Knockout semi-final 2-1.

What other leg-shattering incidents can you think of?
