Only four foreigners currently hold coaching positions in the PSL this season. This means the local mentors are finally dominating the scene and are being given the respect they deserve, but who has turned out for their country.
In light of this unprecedented feat, I take a look at local coaches that have played for Bafana Bafana.
Steve Komphela
The eloquent coach has 24 caps to his name in which he also captained the side on a number of occasions. He made his debut in Bafana's very first match after they were re-admitted to international football in 1992.
Komphela was also recently appointed as the Kaizer Chiefs head coach, having guided Maritzburg United to their very first top eight finish last season. The 48-year-old has also coached Bafana Bafana, albeit, on an interim basis.
Eric Tinkler
The Orlando Pirates coach represented South Africa on 45 occasions, scoring a single goal against Malawi in 1997.
A mainstay in the Bafana Bafana side that won the 1996 African Cup of Nations, the anchorman had a stellar tournament. So impressed with Tinkler's ability, Brazilian legend, Pele, named him as his player of the tournament.
Pitso Mosimane
"Jingles", as the Bafana Bafana striker is affectionately known, scored one goal in four matches for South Africa.
Mosimane became the first black coach to win the PSL title as he guided Mamelodi Sundowns to league success in the 2013/14 season. The outspoken coach is part of a select few that have played and coached their countries.
Roger De Sa
The Mozambican-born coach collected a solitary national cap in a 3-0 defeat to Zambia in 1993. De Sa was also part of the golden generation of 1996, however, he was a third choice goalkeeper as Clive Barker had Andre Arendse and John Tlale as his first and second choices respectively.
Clinton Larsen
Larsen made his Bafana Bafana debut in a 2-0 defeat against Holland in 1997. The Durban-born coach, however, failed to stamp his authority with Bafana Bafana like he did at club level. Larsen is currently the head coach of Bloemfontein Celtic.
Which of the above mentioned coaches do you think has enjoyed more success, be it as a coach or player?
