Juventus and Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini has become the first Italian player to join Juan Mata's initiative of donating 1% of his salary to charity. Do you know what it is for?
Earlier in the year, Manchester United's Mata started an initiative with which encouraged fellow footballers to donate a small percentage of their wages to a charity called Common Goal.
Mata's initiative has slowly started to pick up steam, and out of the blue, Chiellini decided to take matters into his own hands and contacted Common Goal directly via email.
He wrote:
Since then, Chiellini has formed a partnership with Mata and Common Goal, joining the likes of Mats Hummels, Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan, two members of the USA's women's 2015 FIFA World Cup-winning team.
A few weeks ago, Chiellini's hometown of Livorno was badly hit by flashfoods, which caused destruction and death in the Tuscan town. He has been hands-on in the recovery efforts to help repair the damage done to his city.
It's certainly great to see footballers get involved in selfless projects. Are you impressed by Chiellini and Mata?
