Title Race To Go Down Wire For First Time In 5 Yrs?

The Betway Premiership title race could be competitive for the first time in five years if Orlando Pirates win all their four games in hand.

Pirates saved the season from being a foregone conclusion that Mamelodi Sundowns are going to be crowned champions after their 2-1 win over their rivals on last Sunday.

Talk was already shifting on how soon will Sundowns wrap up the title and the records they could break.

However, with The Buccaneers currently 15 points behind leaders Masandawana, with four games in hand - it is within their hands to take the title race up to the last game, should they win all four matches.

One of the games Pirates have in hand is against Royal AM and should Thwihli Thwahla be expelled, that would work in the Soweto giants' favour, as they will not have to play the KwaZulu-Natal side, with that game declared null and void and also on Sundowns' side, three points would be chalked off their total, as per NSL Handbook.

That scenario would mean Ezimnyama could be equal on points with The Brazilians heading to the last few matches of the season.

The last time a PSL title race went to the last game was in the 2019/20 campaign, when Sundowns edged Kaizer Chiefs by two points on the last matchday.

Since then, Masandawana have been strolling to the finish line, although AmaZulu gave a commendable chase in the following season but the Tshwane giants ultimately won the title with three games to spare.

The gap between Sundowns and number two on the log started to get wider from the 2021/22 term, after winning the Premiership with four games to spare, with second-placed Cape Town City 16 points behind.

The 2022/23 campaign was the earliest Sundowns wrapped up the title in the PSL history, as by matchday 23 they were crowned champions, with The Ghosts ending second, 16 points behind.

Last season, the Brazilians also won the title early, with six games to go, as Pirates finished 23 points behind in second spot in the table.
