LALIGA

Result: Atletico Madrid 2-4 Barcelona

Date: 16 March 2025

Venue: Metropolitano Stadium

Barcelona made two changes from the win over Benfica on Tuesday, as Cubarsi and Dani Olmo replaced Ronald Araujo and Frenkie de Jong while Atletico recalled Robin Le Normand and Samuel Lino after the loss to Real Madrid.

Both sides were eager to get maximum points, especially after Real Madrid moved top of the table on Saturday evening after defeating Villarreal thanks to Kylian Mbappe's brace.

After a quiet opening, Atletico nearly broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute when Julian Alvarez turned provider to play in Guiliano Simeone through on goal, but the Argentine was denied by a fine save by goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny.

Diego Simeone's charges got their reward just before the halftime break as Guiliano Simeone got on the end of Antoine Griezmann's pass and pulled the ball back for Julian Alvarez, who fired home his fourth goal in four league games.

Barcelona came out firing in the second half and went close to pulling themselves level through Lamine Yamal, who pounced on a loose ball in the box and carved out space before firing just wide of the upright.

However, it was Atletico who got the next goal in the 69th minute as substitute Alexander Sorloth bagged his 11th goal of the campaign by turning home a cross from Conor Gallagher, but Barca players were not happy as there was a handball in the build up.

The visitors pulled a goal back three minutes later as Inigo Martinez did well to pick out Robert Lewandowski, who controlled well before volleying home his 22nd league goal of the campaign.

Barcelona completed the comeback in the 78th minute as Raphinha was afforded time and space to pick out the run of Ferran Torres, who guided the Brazilians' cross past Jan Oblak with a clinical header.

With the game headed for a draw, Yamal popped up with the winning goal in second-half stoppage time with an effort from distance that took a deflection and sailed past Oblak.

There was enough time for Barcelona to grab a fourth goal in the 97th minute as Torres completed his brace with a composed finish on the edge of the box.
