African Chief Reveals How They Missed Out On Lamine Yamal

Lamine Yamal is not only the best young player in the world, but he is also perhaps among the best footballers on the entire planet. His performances for his national team, Spain, and his club, Barcelona, have propelled him to superstardom, with comparisons being drawn to the likes of Lionel Messi.

While the teenage sensation is one of La Roja's most important players, he could have been playing for an African nation. His father is of Moroccan descent, and it was widely reported that Atlas Lions head coach Walid Regragui tried his best to get him to commit to the North African giants, but ultimately, the La Masia alumnus decided to play for the record European champions.

Royal Moroccan Football Federation president Fouzi Lekjaa revealed the lengths they went to in order to successfully integrate Lamine Yamal.

"We met with his parents. We presented our project to them, but Lamine was already convinced to go with Spain," the North African executive said, as per Afrik Foot.

Albert Luque, former sporting director of the Spanish Football Federation, has now also revealed that while the player wanted to play for the 2010 FIFA World Cup winners, his father wanted him to represent the nation of his birth.

"The father was more complicated than the mother. He told me that in Morocco, they were going to kill him. He was the one who had the hardest time accepting. He told me things... better not to say anything," Luque told Cadena SER.
