Two Bucs Stars In CAFCL Best Group Stage XI

Two Orlando Pirates stars and a Mamelodi Sundowns midfield maestro have made it into the CAF Champions League group stage XI announced on Wednesday evening.

Both Pirates and Sundowns reached the quarterfinals of the competition and will know who they will come up against when the draw takes place today, with the possibility of facing off in the last eight.

Before the draw, however, the best XI players from the round robin phase was announced by CAF, as Relebohile Mofokeng and Thabiso Sesane made the side from Pirates, while Sundowns' Teboho Mokoena also features.

Mofokeng was arguably the best performer for the Buccaneers in the group stages, scoring three goals and contributing with two assists. His finest moment came in the final group match when he opened the scoring against the continent's most successful side in the competition, Al Ahly.

Sesane, meanwhile, was a key figure at the back, as the Buccaneers finished with the best defensive record in Group C. They conceded four goals, keeping two clean sheets along the way, and Sesane's partnership with Nkosinathi Sibisi was pivotal in the Buccaneers' successful group stage campaign. Sesane recently sustained an injury and may not be able to feature in the knockout phase.

Sundowns did not have the best group stage campaign, but experience in the competition got them through. Mokoena was an important component in the midfield, playing 90 minutes in all of the matches.

The clubs will now wait to see who they will face in the quarterfinals.
