The story

Bafana Bafana and Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams had a 2024 remember, a year that saw him scoop a host of individual awards.

In December, the Port Elizabeth-born shot-stopper was rounded off a successful calendar year by walking away with the CAF Men's Interclub Player of the Year and Goalkeeper of the Year awards at the CAF Awards 2024 ceremony held in Marrakech, 16 December.

He started the year with a remarkable effort at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Ivory Coast, leading Bafana Bafana to a Bronze medal in the competition.

His heroics in Bafana's quarter-final penalty shootout win over Cape Verde, where he saved four penalties, propelled him to global acclaim and status.

Speaking to the latest issue of the Mamelodi Sundowns Digital Magazine, "Ronza" touched on how much he's grown as a leader after a memorable year.

"The coaches I have worked with have played a big role in my growth. I always try to learn from my experiences and those around me," noted the humble Williams.

"I have been fortunate to work alongside amazing leaders like Dennis Onyango, Themba Zwane and several others at Mamelodi Sundowns. They have shown me what it takes to lead both on and off the pitch.

"We learn from each other, sharing ideas and pushing each other to be better," he added.

The 32-year-old's incredible 2024 included accolades, AFL Golden Glove, AFCON Golden Glove, PSL Footballer of the Year, DStv Premiership Goalkeeper of the Season, and SAFJA Footballer of the Season.

He was also nominated for the prestigious Yashin Trophy, finishing ninth in the overall rankings, where he enjoyed an unforgettable night at the Ballon d'Or awards in Paris.
