It may have taken some time, but the veteran Belgian tactician has overseen Bafana Bafana's latest resurgence on the international stage.

To start 2024, the 72-year-old led South Africa to a third-place finish at the latest Africa Cup of Nations, and by the end of the year, he became the first national team boss to successfully qualify for two successive AFCONs, as the 1996 African champions officially booked their place at the continental showpiece in Morocco next year.

His success with Bafana has seemingly attracted a lot of outside interest in his services, and one of the nations that were looking to poach him was Tunisia.

It was rumoured after the 2023 AFCON that the Carthage Eagles were aggressively trying to bring the former central defender on board after a disappointing tournament by their lofty standards, but the Humbeek native poured cold water on the reports.

Since Jalel Kadri resigned from the head coach role after their AFCON exit in Ivory Coast, there have been three different managers to take on the challenge.

However, according to Chedly Rahmani, a member of the committee appointed by FIFA to manage the affairs of the Tunisian Football Federation, the man they actually wanted was Broos.

However, they were unable to successfully secure his services due to his demands, it is claimed.

Speaking to Radio Mosaique FM, Rahmani said: "Hugo Broos, we wanted him. The problem is that he wanted to come with his entire staff, and it would cost us €2.9 million per year. We don't have that budget."
