It was an significant match for the South African tactician at the King Abdullah Sports City as he faced Al Ahli Jeddah in Asian football's premier club competition.

The Kagiso native took charge of the Royals in 2022, when they were still in the Saudi Arabian second division, and helped them return to the Saudi Pro League.

Once Mosimane achieved promotion, the Public Investment Fund completed the takeover of the Jeddah-based club and decided to dismiss the former Mamelodi Sundowns boss, appointing German Matthias Jaissle, who has been at the helm since.

On Tuesday evening, the 60-year-old, who is now coaching Esteghlal FC, came up against the Saudi Arabian giants for the second time since his departure.

He suffered a heavy 5-1 defeat to them last season when he was still in charge of Abha, but in the Champions League, it was a much tighter affair as the Iranian club came extremely close to achieving their second victory in Group B.

Raphael Silva opened the scoring for Mosimane's side in the 42nd minute, but England international Ivan Toney levelled matters in first-half stoppage time.

The Persian Gulf Pro outfit retook the lead through Mohammadhossein Eslami in the 51st minute but were reduced to ten men 30 minutes later.

This paved the way for the Saudi outfit to level matters through Toney once again, who converted a penalty in the 86th minute.

The result brings an end to Al Ahli's run of five consecutive victories. Mosimane's side now return to league action at the weekend, where he will be looking to secure a second successive victory against Foolad to climb up the table.
