A former Manchester United attacker has pulled the curtain back on what it was like competing for places in the starting XI against Quinton Fortune.

The South African attacker spent six trophy-laden years at Old Trafford, signing for the English giants in 2000 from Atletico Madrid. During his time with the Red Devils, the Cape Town native won three Premier League titles, an FA Cup, as well as an FA Community Shield.
The left-sided utility man was ever-dependable for Sir Alex Ferguson, playing a total of 126 matches for the Scotsman. However, as he was approaching the end of his career with the Mancunians, a youngster by the name of Kieran Richardson was breaking into the first-team squad.
The English winger was brought up through the club's academy and would end up playing 81 matches for the United's senior side.
Speaking on the FilthyFellas podcast, the eight-time England international was quizzed on whether he thought he should have been playing more instead of Fortune. However, the London native claims that it was not the Bafana Bafana star he was trying to displace in the first team.
"Obviously as a player you back yourself, you feel that you're the best," the former Sunderland and Aston Villa star said.
"You ask any player, they'll say: 'I feel like I'm the best player.' But them times I'm not thinking about Fortune, I'm thinking about Ryan Giggs. That's the main guy, not Fortune.

"Even though Quinton is my guy, I love him, but even he will tell you that he is not thinking about Kieran, he's thinking about Giggs. We're thinking about the main man. He's the one you have to dismantle, not Quinton Fortune or somebody like that."
