Lawyer: Mokwana's Not A Free Agent, Door Closes On Chiefs

Lawyer: Mokwana's Not A Free Agent, Door Closes On Chiefs

Bafana Bafana forward Elias Mokwana is now likely to be staying at his Tunisian club Esperance de Tunis, the Siya crew has been informed.

The local media had previously reported how Kaizer Chiefs could have a chance to finally bring in the player, because of the financial problems between the South African and his foreign club.

Siya sources have now indicated that all the involved parties have resolved the previous breach of contract that could have ended the relationship between the player and Esperance. This rules out any potential move for Chiefs, or even the European clubs linked to him, as his contract expires in 2027.

Soccer Laduma contacted Cream Sports Management (CSM) chairman Pontsho Madumo but he referred this publication to lawyer Kabelo Mashigo who told the Siya crew that Esperance have solved the issue.

Talking to Soccer Laduma, Mashigo said that it's not always that the breach is about finances as there were other factors in the contract which also needed attention.

"Yes, there was a breach of contract between employer and employee and when we raised it on Friday, Esperance told us that they had some issues which they needed to be sorted for that breach to be rectified and they have since done that and Elias (Mokwana) will now have to honour his contract with the team. He has a three-year contract with the team and he is going back after the Bafana Bafana game to honour that contract because Esperance have now honoured their part of the contract," Mashigo told the Siya Crew.

The sports lawyer explained that the previous breach by Esperance didn't mean that Mokwana was a free agent at that point in time.

"No. There was no way he was going to be a free agent. It was about both parties meeting their part of the contract. As a player he has his part to play and as a club they have their part to play and since they have done that now, he is still their player. I was really surprised when people were saying he was going to be a free agent. There was nothing like that," Mashigo concluded.

Mokwana has been a regular for Bafana Bafana under coach Hugo Broos since making his debut in March this year, and could play against South Sudan in the nation's final Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Cape Town on Tuesday evening.
