Motaung’s Tribute To Khoza: ‘We Need To Write Our History’

Motaung’s Tribute To Khoza: ‘We Need To Write Our History’

Dr Irvin Khoza, PSL Chairman, gives gift to Kaizer Motaung, Founder and Director of Kaizer Chiefs during the 2024 National Soccer League annual general meeting at Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg on 13 November 2024

Kaizer Chiefs chairman and long-serving member of the National Soccer League Kaizer Motaung has paid tribute to his colleague and friend in PSL supremo Irvin Khoza.

On Wednesday, during the NSL's Quadrennial General Meeting held at Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg, Motaung was honoured by Khoza for the historic role he played in the formation of the league in the 1980s, as well as his massive contribution to the development of football in the country over the years.

As a token of appreciation, Khoza presented Motaung with a R2 million gift, which also coincided with the birthday celebrations for the Amakhosi boss who turned 80 last month.

Talking after receiving the gift, Motaung lauded Khoza while he also reflected on the journey they have travelled dedicated to the game over the years.

"Obviously, we've come a very, very long way. When we put this League together, we manoeuvred and worked together as a team. Even when he was not the chairman of Pirates at the time, he was with us every time when we were fighting with Sanfa (South African National Football Association) at the time where we had leave Sanfa because they wanted to run both amateur football and professional football. Our journey with the chairman has been very exciting and eye-opening because we went through quite a lot. It needs time for us to put something together. We can write the whole history ourselves and not wait for somebody to come and write it for us. We need to write our history in terms of where we come from because this has been our life through and through," said Motaung, speaking to the media after the event.

Motaung also commented on the introduction of three new members to the PSL Executive Committee in TS Galaxy's Tim Sukazi, Richards Bay FC's Sifiso 'Jomo' Biyela and Johnny Mogaladi from Polokwane City.

"Obviously, we have to be open to the young ones to take over because our time will come to an end. There's been a proper succession plan that we will obviously have to do together as the committee to see how best we can probably put certain things in place so that we can be able to get a proper way forward," he said.
