CAF VP Backs Motsepe To Return As President

A CAF vice-president has backed Patrice Motsepe to return for a second term.

The vice-president of CAF has lauded Patrice Motsepe's achievements as head of African football's governing body, stating that the South African should continue as president.

Last weekend, the Mamelodi Sundowns owner became the first football executive to announce his candidacy for the 2025 CAF presidential elections.

The Pretoria native has been at helm of the Cairo-based institution since 2021, and while he inherited a controversy-laden organisation, he has managed to turn things around.

In an official statement released by the body earlier this month, CAF revealed that it is projecting a net profit of $11.7 million (R207.6 million) for 2024/25, the first time they have made such revenues in a long time.

Among other initiatives, Dr Motsepe has initiated increases in prize money for competitions on the continent, as well as increased the annual grants member associations receive.

He has gained many admirers for his work as a result, and now Senegal Football Federation president and CAF vice-president Augustin Senghor has backed the 62-year-old's declaration to stay on for a second term.

"He has managed to put CAF into a new era," Senghor told BBC Sport Africa.

"Africa Cups of Nations are more and more organised, we have profitability and people are giving more respect to CAF.

"We need stability and continuity to improve. When a leadership is working well, why change it?"

Motsepe claimed he was surprised by the calls for his continuation as the head of CAF, but added that he is determined to continue the good work.

"I was partly taken aback by the huge insistence about continuity," the philanthropist told the aforementioned news outlet.

"There was some concern that there may not be the same degree of emphasis on governance, on ethics and the sort of fundamental changes that we've had to introduce.

"There's a lot of good, good progress that has been made, but there is still a lot of work to be done."
