On Monday, it was confirmed that legendary Dutch footballer and coach Johan Neeskens died aged 73 after suddenly falling ill on the weekend.

The former midfielder famously managed Sundowns between 2011 and 2012 in South Africa, his last role before moving on from his career on the sidelines.

As a player, Neeskens was at his peak between 1970 and 1979, during which he represented Ajax and Barcelona, winning three European Cups and the Copa del Rey, among other trophies.

Also a two-time FIFA World Cup runner-up with the Netherlands, Neeskens scored 17 goals in 49 appearances for his country between 1970 and 1981.

Following his playing career, the Dutchman worked as an assistant manager for Ons Oranje, Australia, Barcelona and Galatasaray, before accepting an approach from Downs for the head coach role in 2011.

Masandawana posted a tribute for Neeskens on social media in response to the sad news on Monday, along with the Blaugrana, Ajax and the Dutch Football Association (KNVB).

The KNVB called him "one of the leading players that Dutch football has ever produced", while the Catalan giants shared a touching message on X (formerly Twitter).

Ajax, meanwhile, said: "We are deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Johan Neeskens. Our thoughts are with his family at this time. Rest in peace, Ajax legend."
