Ex-Buccaneer: Their Presence Unsettled Stellenbosch

A former Orlando Pirates player has touched on what he believes helped the team in their MTN8 victory at the weekend.

The Buccaneers won the MTN8 for the third time in a row after defeating Stellenbosch FC 3-1 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.

Former Pirates striker James Mothibi has lauded the supporters for their role in the team's success as the Soweto giants made history by becoming the first team to win the trophy three consecutive times.

"I would like to first congratulate Orlando Pirates as a whole and the club's supporters who came to Durban from all the corners of South Africa to support the team. I hope everyone is back home safe. Congratulations to our coach Jose Riveiro and his technical team for the victory. Congratulations to our chairman Irvin Khoza for building such a huge brand that Orlando Pirates is today, and he is now reaping the rewards. We thank the players for making this victory possible. Coming to the game on Saturday and what happened after, I think MTN must just design another trophy because the current one belongs to Orlando Pirates. For years, it will be in the club's offices in Houghton," said Mothibi, speaking exclusively to the Siya crew.

"About the game itself, I knew that Stellenbosch FC would be stubborn. They were very tactically good in terms of keeping the ball and their organisation. They were very focused and aimed at catching Pirates on counter attacks. They had chances but Pirates were strong mentally and didn't allow them to cause trouble. The supporters played their role as the 12th man and that helped the team. Their presence unsettled Stellenbosch and motivated Pirates," concluded Mothibi.
