Yeye: The Best Youngster I've Seen In A Long Time

Yeye: The Best Youngster I've Seen In A Long Time

CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA - AUGUST 28: Relebohile Mofokeng of Orlando Pirates shoots and scores the opening goal during the MTN8, semi final 1st leg match between Cape Town City FC and Orlando Pirates at DHL Cape Town Stadium on August 28, 2024 in Cape Town, South Africa. Former Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Reneilwe Letsholonyane believes Relebohile Mofokeng can take his game to new heights if he can score between eight and 10 goals a season.

After walking away with the Young Player of the Season Award last term, a lot more will be expected from Mofokeng, but he does not seem to be fazed. He has already bagged two goals for the Buccaneers in all competitions this season, his latest coming last night as the Soweto giants played out to a 1-1 draw with Cape Town City in the MTN8 first leg semi-final in the Mother City.

Mofokeng has become one of Pirates' most dangerous attackers, using his trickery and creativity to find a chink in the opposition armour. If he adds more goals to his game, Letsholonyane believes the youngster will become unstoppable and take his game to a whole new level.

"Last season, he was the best youngster that I've seen in a long time. He is one player that I have not seen, at his age, playing at that level in a very long time. When he started playing, he was a bit slow and you could see that he was not used to the space. But once he got used to the environment and got comfortable, he became a different player. His attitude is right. He has the right attitude with and without the ball. He has the right attitude to be part of the team," Letsholonyane told media during a Hisense event, where the company announced their new partnership with Spanish giants Real Madrid.

"I mostly look at the behaviour without the ball, when it comes to those extremely talented young players. With him, with and without the ball, you will see that he has the right attitude. He will try to track back even though he is not naturally gifted in terms of his defensive attributes. He will try to take shots. Is he going to be successful all the time? Definitely not. Before he scored the goal over the weekend (in the Champions League), think back to how many times last season he tried to cut in and take a shot and it did not go in. Every game he does the same thing without fail. He does not give up. When it does not work, you can see the frustration, but he keeps on doing it. For me, he is currently the best youngster I've seen in a while."

"If he can add that (goals) to his game. Let's say eight to 10 goals a season, it will do a great deal for his career. By the time he is 24 or 25, he will be experienced and the tally of him scoring will go up to between 10 and 15.
