Matthews: We Don't Want 'Over The Hill' Chiefs & Downs Players

SuperSport United CEO Stan Matthews has revealed why the club turned down the opportunity to sign former Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns players.

Matsatsantsa have enjoyed mutually beneficial relationships with their Gauteng counterparts in Sundowns, Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.

This season alone the club signed Vincent Pule from Pirates while Nyiko Mobbie and Ricardo Goss joined from Sundowns.

However, SuperSport turned down the option of signing both Brian Onyango and Sfiso Hlanti respectively after the duo spent some time training with the club during pre-season and Matthews revealed the reason for this.

"I can't keep bringing in 30-year-olds into the club and there have been opportunities to sign Hlanti and Onyango who are very good players. Hlanti would add a lot of experience to us at left-back, but I can't bring another 30-year-old into my club," Matthews told journalists at the club's new sleeve sponsorship.

"I'm going to bring 24-year-old to 28-year-old players who have a great re-sell value to whoever offers me the best deal and who can stay with the club if needs be and still be in the prime of their career, not up-and-coming and not over the hill either. That's where we found ourselves over the years in recalibrating our club," he added.

The Siya crew has subsequently reported that Hlanti has resurfaced in Kwa-Zulu Natal, where his club search continues.
