Kaizer Chiefs' Sporting Director Kaizer Motaung Junior has provided a bit more clarity on the next steps in the illustrious career of veteran goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune.

It is clear that Chiefs envision a future for Khune beyond the playing field.

The 36-year-old is out of contract and was left out of the club's pre-season tour, meaning he had no chance to make an impression on the club's new technical team.

There are possibilities for the Ventersdorp-born star to form part of the club's development ranks as well as the senior team, though it needs to be established exactly which role he will be occupying going forward.

"I think as time goes on we'll be able to give away more information. At the start of the season we sat down with Itu (Khune), we spoke and we released a statement as far as his playing contract. We assessed and we sat down with Itu and we see him playing a very valuable role within this institution," Motaung Junior told journalists at the club's 2024/25 kit launch.

"He has contributed tremendously to this institution and is a living legend. I think he has a lot to offer whether it's with the academy players or the senior players in various roles. So, I think as time goes on, we'll be able to divulge the next steps with Itu - but he's very much an important part of this family, this organisation and this team.

"As the weeks unfold, we'll be able to release a bit more information, but a person who has achieved and been at one club like he has, I think he's a part of the fabric in this cloth for everything in this team and we are privileged to have someone like him at this team, especially at such an important time," he added.
