The story

The Orlando Pirates Home and Away kits is scheduled to be released officially in 11 days from now (22 June) after the team's pre-season trip to Spain, with fans already getting a look at both strips on social media over the last two weeks.

Both Home and Away designs by adidas for the Buccaneers were leaked on Twitter/X, before the club teased content of what could be a memorable kit release.

The club's new Home kit for 2024/25 is a more sleek design compared to last year's avant-garde effort from fashion designer, Thebe Magugu.

With red details on a black base, using the current adidas kit template for next season, the Pirates Home kit is a thing of beauty and pays homage to the James "Sofasonke" Mpanza.

James "Sofasonke" Mpanza is hailed as the Father of Soweto, and the nickname "Magebhula" is attributed to Mpanza due to his housing advocacy for the people in Soweto in the 1940s.

Although Mpanza is credited by some as the founder of the Buccaneers, he in fact started the Orlando Boys Club as a recreational youth club for the young people of Orlando.

As mentioned in a Soccer Laduma print article in 2020, Mpanza, introduced activities such as dancing and drama, draughts. Then, in 1935, he started the first civic movement in South Africa, Sofasonke Movement, which had housing and shelter for all among its programmes.

In 1937, Orlando Boys Club introduced football. The football team grew in stature and then, in 1939, it was decided that a breakaway is needed as the succeeding team outgrew the youth club, with Mpanza being the patron manager of the side.

The James "Sofasonke" Mpanza name will be shown at the back of the new Orlando Pirates home jersey, behind the collar and above where the player's number and name is displayed.
