EURO 2024 Star 'Banned' For Celebration

A EURO 2024 star will reportedly be handed a two-match ban for his recent goal celebration – here is the latest.

According to Germany-based publication Bild, Turkey centre-back Merih Demiral is set to be given a ban of two matches following his goal celebration in the round of 16.

The former Juventus centre-back scored twice to send his nation to the quarter-finals and is now expected not to be available.

Demiral celebrated by showing alleged "Grey Wolves" hand symbols reportedly considered to be linked to a right-wing extremist movement in Turkey.

Bild reports the organisation have been closely surveilled by the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution in Germany "for years".

Speaking after their 2-1 victory over Austria, Demiral briefly explained the reason for his choice of celebration.

"The way I celebrated has something to do with my Turkish identity. I saw people in the stadium who also made this gesture," he said.

Earlier in the competition, Albania's Arlind Daku was banned for two games after singing "nationalist chants" with Albanian supporters.

In response, UEFA said: "The player did not respect the general principles of conduct, violated the basic rules of decent behavior, used sporting events to make unsportsmanlike statements and brought football into disrepute."

England's Jude Bellingham, meanwhile, was also under investigation this week after his goal celebration against Slovakia. Unlike Demiral, though, the 21-year-old is reportedly only set to be fined
