Flashback: Khune Contract Uncertainty Isn't New At Chiefs...

Itumeleng Khune during the DStv Premiership match between AmaZulu FC and Kaizer Chiefs at Moses Mabhida Stadium on 12 May 2024 in Durban, South Africa.

With Itumeleng Khune's future at Kaizer Chiefs still looking uncertain, we take a look back at when the club bizarrely announced his departure in 2015.

The story

As rumours continue to circulate regarding veteran goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune's future at the Glamour Boys, the Soweto Giants once made strange blunder in announcing Khune's departure back in 2015!

Chiefs' Twitter/X page at the time wrote: "The Club Itumeleng Khune have agreed to part ways. We would like to thank him and wish him all the best #KCPressCon #ThankYouItu."

This was a tricky period for Khune at Chiefs as they two parties were deadlocked in their talks to extend the former captain's stay at the club.

Khune reportedly decided not to renew his contract at the time, unless his demands were met. Chiefs were said to have made it clear during the off-season that they were not going to pander to goalkeeper's whims.

Khune was South Africa's number one goalkeeper at the time and Chiefs were willing to let him go despite him winning the PSL Footballer of the Season award in the 2012/13 campaign, where they won both the league and Nedbank Cup.

Chiefs almost let go of Itu after triumphant 2014/15 league season under Stuart Baxter, likely to be Khune's last League-winning medal for Amakhosi.

The fact that Chiefs had announced Khune's departure on their website, along with Mandla Masango and Tefu Mashamaite, is probably why the infamous tweet is still up.
