Mamelodi Sundowns are getting closer to extending Bafana Bafana defender Grant Kekana's contract for an additional three years, ensuring his stay at the club well beyond his current terms.

Siya sources close to the negotiations have indicated that both Kekana and his representatives are satisfied with the offer from the 2016 CAF Champions League winners, and the player is keen to continue his career at Sundowns.

Sources familiar with the discussions added that while the deal is not yet finalized, the outlook is very positive.

"What the team is doing is what they did with (Mothobi) Mvala and (Khuliso) Mudau such that they have a solid team for as long as they can. They are using the European way of doing things of extending contracts and they make sure they secure their players while there is still enough time," said the Siya source.

Kekana's current contract is set to expire in June next year according to the source, with an option for an additional year. However, Sundowns are looking to secure his services until June 2029.

"Grant's initial contract is supposed to end next year in June but there is a one-year option. What the club is doing is to extend it until June 2029. So they will be safe with him," the source added.

The new deal is anticipated to be finalized before the commencement of the 2024/25 season, according to a second insider.

"It is understood that by the time the 2024/25 season kickoffs his new contract would have been signed. It's is believed that all the parties involved are happy with the new three-year deal," the second Siya source stated.

Soccer Laduma contacted Kekana's agent Steve Kapeluschnik and Mamelodi Sundowns but no response was received by the time this report was published.

Sundowns' proactive approach in securing Kekana's extension reflects their strategic planning and commitment to maintaining a strong and cohesive squad. By locking down key players like Kekana, Sundowns not only stabilise their defensive lineup but also reinforce their ambitions to remain at the top of African football.
