The story

Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns legend Teko Modise is happy to board the Relebohile Mofokeng hype train and feels the youngster is ready to make the next step in his career.

The teenage sensation made his debut for Bafana Bafana last week Tuesday in a 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifier and sent the crowd into a frenzy after coming on as a stoppage-time substitute in South Africa's 3-1 win over Zimbabwe.

Mofokeng is currently subject to transfer speculation this off-season, with a few European clubs said to be showing interest in the skillful 19-year-old.

In his first full season at the Buccaneers, Mofokeng featured 38 times and made 11 goal contributions, including a sensational late winner in Pirates' 2-1 win over Mamelodi Sundowns in the Nedbank Cup final early this month.

After Mofokeng helped Bucs retain their Nedbank Cup title, he was embraced by a number of legends, including Teko Modise who gave him a signal of approval.

'Dona' told eNCA sports reporter, Ntsako Mkhari that the earlier Mofokeng makes the move to Europe, the better and compared him to his former Bafana teammates who started in Europe as young players.

"At what age are you supposed to be ready for Europe? Because at the end of the day, you're going to a team that's going to be coached, and you'll get better. Here in South Africa, you will be coached and get better. I don't think there's a right or bad time to go to Europe. But also, bare in mind that age is a factor. So, the sooner you go, the better.

"Steven Pienaar left early, how many years did he play in the EPL? Benni left early, so did Mbazo [Aaron Mokoena] There's a lot of players that left early and we never said anything about it and they were successful at that level.

"The sooner he goes, the better, but again, you lose such a good player from an Orlando Pirates perspective... The are the type of players we need to be playing in the top leagues," concluded Teko.
