CAF Official Reveals Motsepe 'Refuses' CAF Salary, Invests Own Money

CAF Official Reveals Motsepe 'Refuses' CAF Salary, Invests Own Money

CAF president Patrice Motsepe is said to be waiving all his CAF monies and investing his own cash in a bid to uplift African football.

A chief at CAF has revealed that the institution's president, Dr. Patrice Motsepe, refuses to receive a salary from the African football's governing body, and instead puts his own money into the organisation.

The South African football executive made his fortunes in the mining industry, with his millions having allowed for him to venture into philanthropy, and according to CAF commercial director Hassan El Kamah, Motsepe has also been charitable to the football institution he now governs.

The Egyptian chief, speaking on the Captain programme on the DMC channel in Egypt, has claimed that the 62-year-old waives the entirety of the earnings he is supposed to receive from CAF, and even invests some of his own money in order to ensure that African players, clubs and federations earn competitive salaries and receive adequate prize money for their efforts.

SABC Sports reported that, through his roles as president of CAF, and FIFA vice-president and council member, coupled with his investment towards the genesis of the annual CAF Schools tournament, the Tshwane-born mogul has contributed a total of R252 million.

For years, CAF had been scrutinised for a lack of transparency regarding their finances, but according to El Kamah, they are working on a report of all the profits from the recently concluded Africa Cup of Nations, and once completed, it will be released on their website.

El Kamah also addressed the rumours suggesting that the Royal Moroccan Football Federation had control over Motsepe and CAF as a whole, rubbishing the claim and stating that all of the organisation's member associations are treated equally.

"There are false impressions about some countries control over matters within the CAF," he said while speaking to the DMC channel.
